Tim Russell, First String Center, Added to Growing Casualty List

Crimson grid prospects received another seyere blow yesterday afternoon with the announcement that Tim Russell will be kept on the sidelines for several weeks because of a muscle inury received in Saturday's practice game.

Russell is the first string center, and as the only veteran on the center squad, his loss will be keenly felt. To help plug the gap, Dick Harlow has decided to move versatile Cliff Wilson to the trigger position from his post at guard. Although Rick Hedblom, Dan Cheever and Bill Coleman have developed fast his fall, they are not sufficiently seasoned to start a Varsity game. A bad case of nerves usually accompanies a debut into Varsity competition and is often costly. At the center post it is usually fatal.

Wilson has been shifted from position to position with amazing rapidity since the end of last season. Last fall he and his room-mate, Chief Boston, battled it out for a starting post at blocking back. They both played about half of each game, although it was Wilson's name that usually appeared in the starting lineups.

Then, with the graduation of the center trio, Gaffney, Jones, and Kessler, Wilson was moved to a guard. Dick Harlow felt that there was little to choose between him and Boston, and that by such a shift both could be in the game at the same time. Now, with Russell's temporary withdrawal from competition, Wilson has again been used as a convenient gap-plugger. He has played center at Andover, and for a time on his Freshman eleven.

Springfield Scouted

Yesterday's practice session featured methods of defense against the Springfield plays as demonstrated by a Jayvee team. As is often the case with early season opponents, Springfield uses the "razzle-dazzle" system of football, with triple laterals, double shifts, and long forwards forming the backbone of their attack.

Kick-off plays, punting onder pressure, and dummy scrimmage took up the rest of the afternoon. No contact scrimmage was called so that the effects of Saturday's game could completely wear off.

The Varsity cut was announced yesterday afternoon, and the list of those retained on the squad follows. All others have been kept on the Jayvees.

The total number on the squad is 41. Of this number, five are Sophomores. They are: Downing, Healey, Hallett, Coleman, and Macdonald.
