STILLMAN REVAMPED FOR BEGINNING OF A NEW HARVARD YEAR

Over $26,000 was spent in remodeling Stillman Infirmary in order to bring the ancient haven for the sick up to modern efficiency. Electrical equipment was installed, new medical equipment put in, fire escapes put in, the entry changed around, and practically the whole interior renovated during the summer.

Two new doctors have replaced two of last year's staff. Dr. Neil L. Crone will take the place of Dr. John Cass at the Law School and Dr. Andrez W. Contratto is succeeding Dr. Earl Chapman.

In addition, it was announced that Mrs. Robert Brooks, head nurse there for seven years, has resigned and her place is being taken by Miss Rita Corbett who comes from the Boston Lying In Hospital and was formerly connected with the Massachusetts General Hospital. Mrs. Brooks will stay on for a short while until Miss Corbett is able to orientate herself completely.

Mrs. Brooks work was characterized by Dr. Arlie V. Bock '12, Henry K. Oliver Professor of Hygiene and head of the medical department, as being of the most efficient and faithful sort. He expressed himself as extremely sorry that she was forced to leave because of family reasons.

The title of the head nurse has been changed from "Matron" to "Superintendent of Stillman Infirmary."

During the past two years about $40,000 has been spent. Until Dr. Bock's appointment so head of the Hygiene Department few extensive alterations were made in the building, and it had become greatly outmoded.

The alterations in detail are as follows: The kitchen has been electrified. A new refrigerator has been put in place of the old ice box, and a new larger stove has been installed. The stockroom has also been changed around to be of more easy access to the kitchen.

The elevator has been electrified in order to facilitate the movement of sick students. The size of the service rooms has been doubled in order to improve the handling of trays and the care of the sick in the wards.

More sterilizers have been put in Stillman, and others have been rearranged. Equipment similar to modern hospitals has thus been installed and bids fair to increase the efficiency of the hospital considerably.

In the entrance to the Infirmary the reception desk has been taken out from under the stairs and placed out in the open. This move will lessen the confusion both of visitors and ill men coming into the Infirmary.

On the northwest side a dangerous fire hazard has been removed by the building of a fire escape. Formerly both stairways down were in the main part of the building, and people on the top of the retunda were in danger of being out off in case a fire had gotten a good start in the kitchen. Because of the fire escape it has been possible to take out the rear stairway, and in its place steel lockers have been placed for the inmates.

There will be no increase in the $20.00 fee this year in spite of the fact that the treasury has been considerably depleted because of the improvements. An attempt will now be made to build up a reserve fund in case of any emergency by the outbreak of some severe disease.
