HARLOW DRIVES SQUAD THROUGH SECOND WEEK

Making no division into Varsity and Junior Varsity players but obtaining a definite slant on the ability of his material from the daily scrimmages, Coach Richard Cresson Harlow is already well along in the second week of his intensive fail drill for the opening game with Springfield on October 2.

No cuts will be made until after the practice on Monday. Tomorrow a full length closed game will be played in the Stadium between squads picked from the first four teams, and performances in this fray will just about make or break a man footballistically, it is believed.

Vigerous Scrimmages

Scrimmages were started a couple of days after the enforced delayed opening on September 15 and have continued with increased vigor ever since. There have been both morning and afternoon sessions so far.

Almost everyone returned in satisfactory condition to start the scrimmages immediately if Harlow had wished to emulate Princeton. Captain Russ Allen, however, showed up with an infected leg caused by a cut while on a hike. George Roberts was a couple of days late in returning from Europe and was held out of the opening scrimmages, but is in there taking his daily licks now.

Spirited Battle

The battle for the guard and backfield positions is especially spirited. Cliff Wilson, a burly convert from last year's A team blocking back appears assured of one of the guard posts. In signal drill Russ Allen has been holding down the other, while in the scrimmages, from which Allen will be withheld until about Monday, Bob Downes succeeds Allen. Close behind him is Jee Nee and pressing him is Chuck Klein.

At present the A backfield is composed of Chief Boston as quarterback, Vernon Struck fullback, and Art Oakes and Bob Stuart the halfbacks. Boston is a power on defense, a mauling blocking back, a spine crackling line bucker. Oakes' speciality is hurling passes. Stuart and Struck will alternate on most of the running, Stuart being perhaps the more clusive, Struck the better faker.

Second Backfield

The second backfield shows Fred Jerome as quarterback, Austy Harding and Frank Foley the halfbacks, and Ralph Pope fullback. Jerome is hardly inferior to the similarly built Boston while Pope has been cracking the line in the early scrimmages with sufficient brilliance to win Harlow's praise.

The forward wails line up with Bob Green at left end, Alex Keverkian left tackle, Wilson left guard, Time Russell center, Allen right guard, Ken Booth right tackle, and Don Daughters right end. The second line has Gibby Winter right end, Don Barkin left tackle, Nee left guard, Rick Hedblom center, Downes right guard, Tom Healey right tackle, and Win Jameson right end.

Woods and Granges

In the backfield there is still George Roberts and Torbert MacDonald to be considered. Roberts saw a wealth of action last year and is sure to want to see a lot more this year. MacDonald is expected to be another Barry Wood or Red Grange--if and when. If and when won't occur until the middle of this season at any rato, according to the most reliable reports current hereabouts.

Two new coaches are Johnny Wood, assistant in the backfield, and Jim Draper, backfield coach for the Jayvees.
