Awards totalling $18,000 and permitting study abroad, during the coming academic year were announced to day as follows:

Coolidge Fellowship of $1,300, for the study of history, to Robert O. Schaifer 3G, of Santa Monica, Calif.

Harvard-Yenching Institute Fellowships totalling $5,600, for Chinese studies, to Paul K. Benedict 3G, of Poughkeepsic, N. Y.; Francis W. Cleaves 4G, of Needham Beights, Mass.; John A. Pope 3G, of Detroit, Mich.; and Edwin O. Reischauer 6G, of Iogimachi, Tokyo-fu, Japan.

Charles Eliot Norton Fellowship of $1,150, for study at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece, to John H. Young 1G, of Springfield, Mass.

John Knowles Paine Travelling Fellowships in Music, of $1,500 each, to Arthur V. Berger 3G, of New York, N. Y., and Everett B. Helm 3G, of Minneapolis, Minn.

Rogers Fellowships of $1,000 each, to Daniel C. Dennett 3G, of Winchester, Mass., for study of history and Wilfred Malenbaum 3G, of Dorchester, Mass., for the study of economics.

Philip H. Sears Scholarship of $850, for the study of philosophy, to Bernard Frieszel 3G, of Bellerose, L. I., N. Y.

Bayard Cutting Fellowship of $1,300, for the study of history, to Winston B. Lewis 3G, of Oak Park, III.

Edward R. Bacon Art Scholarship (for 1937-38 and 1938-39; $1,400 each year) for the study of painting, preferably in Europe, to Albert C. Koch, Jr. 3GSD, of Cambridge, Mass
