Chinese Whatsis Gets Look See in Search for Termites

Maintenance Men Dig Round Base of Statue--Cockroach Seen

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Maintenance activity on the Northern front yesterday indicated that the University may be facing another insect war. Reports that a herd of termites had been seen entering the Yard called forth spade men who were seen at work throughout the afternoon around the Chinese whatsis, or dragon, by Boylston Hall.

Removal of turf and two feet of earth about the edges laid bare the wooden foundation on which the Tercentenary gift stands. Preliminary probings, however, revealed no trace of the marauders, and at a late hour last night it was not known whether more digging would take place at the same spot today or a return be made to Sever Hall, perennial eating ground of these animals.

Also reported yesterday was the discovery of a giant cockroach in Hollis Hall. The Freshman making the find did not know how it compared in size with the cockroach who created a sensation in the Leverett House dining hall two months ago and ceased its depravity only when demolished by two tutors.
