DEACONS GAIN STRAUS TROPHY OVER LOWELL

ELIOT EIGHT SECOND IN CLOSE BATTLE ON CHARLES

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Kirkland House yesterday clinched the Straus trophy as they won three Spring sports competitions, ending up in first place in crew, baseball and tennis.

Rated in finish third behind Lowell and Eliot, the Deacon eight pulled up strong at the finish to nose out both Eliot and Lowell by half a length. As they got away on a good start, Lowell jumped into the lead, followed by Kirkland and Eliot. Adams never threatened.

These positions remained until, after passing the bridge, Kirkland raised their stroke slightly and forged into a lead they never relinquished. Eliot nosed in ahead of the tiring Bellboy boat, and Adams struggled across the finish ten lengths back. The times for the Henley course were 7:11 for Kirkland; Eliot, 7:13; Lowell, 7:15.
