With the announcement that Associate Justice Willis Van Devanter of the Supreme Court is going to retire on June 2, the way is opened for the President to appoint a new member to the court. The two men most prominently mentioned an possibilities for this appointment are both members of the Harvard faculty

Felix Frankfurter, Byrne Professor of Administrative Law, has advised the present administration on parts of its legislative program, and is considered number one possibility.

James M. Landis, newly named Dean of the Law School and Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, who has also been active in New Deal legislation, is second on the prospective list.
