8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
Appointment of a new dean of the Graduate School of Engineering was announced with the statement that Harold M. Westergaard, Gordon McKay Professor of Civil Engineering, would take the place vacated by Harry E. Clifford, Professor emeritus.
Westergaard came to Harvard only last September from the University of Illinois. He has served as a technical expert for the federal government on many construction projects including the Boulder Dam.
From 1916 on he had been on the faculty of the University of Illinois where he was professor of theoretical and applied mechanics. He acted as adviser for the United States Bureau of Reclamation in the building of Boulder Dam, and for other government bureaus in road and dam construction.
Much of his research has been on engineering problems connected with reinforced concrete. He is a member of the American Concrete Institute and was awarded the Watson medal of the Institute in 1921.
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1888 Professor Westergaard studied in Europe and was a practicing engineer in Germany until 1914.
