Not one of several hundred essays in History 1 mid-year blue books this year was of sufficient merit, according to the History Department, to justify the award of the Le Baron Russell Briggs Prize, given for the best essay written by a Freshman at the mid-year examination.
Although general grades in History 1 for the first semester reveal a class of better promise than usual, nevertheless students of exceptional ability are a greater rarity.
Members of the History faculty have decided to withhold the annual award of books, since they consider that no essay of this year should grace the special collection of prize-winning essays of the past.
