Figures released yesterday by Dean Hanford showed that academic achievements of students in the college are tending, in a minor way, toward the extremes of probation and Dean's List.
Of the four classics, 11.3 per cent are on probation as of February 23, 1937, compared with 10.8 per cent on probation after last year's mid-year examinations. On the other hand, of all classes, 20.8 per cent have Dean's List grades now, compared with 20.2 per cent at the same time last year. After the mid-year period in 1934-5, only 18.7 per cent were on the Dean's List.
Freshmen on the Dean's List this year numbered 20.6 per cent, while members if the Class of 1939 were but 19.6 per cent on the honor list: Since the Class of 1939 had the best Freshman year grades of almost any class that Dean Hanford could remember, this year's Yardlings are theoretically the best class, academically. However, continuing their policy of breaking records, this year's Freshmen contributed more names to the probation list than did the Class of 1939.
After mid-years this year, 11.7 per cent Sophomores were on probation, an increase of .2 per cent over last year. 7.7 per cent Juniors were on probation, an increase of .6 per cent over last year. Seniors on probation decreased from 6.2 per cent last year to 5.6 per cent this year.
