Dartmouth Takes Quadrangular Meet As Crimson Follows Yale and Cornell

Coming out about as had been expected, the Varsity track team finished last in the Quadrangular meet Saturday night at the Garden, and forcibly impressed on the Crimson follower used to good track teams that this is indeed a lean year.

Despite their poor showing in these games, however, the trackmen may not do so badly this Spring; for while they will not stand a chance in the Pentagonal or ICAA competition in the dual meet they should stand up a little better, especially against Dartmouth, last night's winners, whose team is full of great wide gaps that will show more in dual competition.

Yardlings Encouraging

From the Harvard standpoint, the most encouraging thing about last night's showing was the Freshman one mile relay team which defeated Cornell in the final record-breaking time of 3 minutes 30 seconds. It was a brilliant third quarter that Torbie MacDonald ran which gave the Crimson a ten yard lead over Ithaca Yardlings, and anchorman Jim Lightbody opened it some more in the final spurt.

The mile run provided the expected excitement, and no one could have asked for a more thrilling race, though the record-breaking time of 4:19.6 was a little to fast for red-headed At Northrop; for the race turned into a battle between Cornell's Wreck Wolch and his captain Johnny Meaden, after Northrop had shot his bolt too soon.

But if Northrop had not gone into that temporary lead in the last quarter, there night have been no new record; for it seemed as if he were forcing the Ithacans to run several seconds faster than they otherwise would have.

Dazzling Relay

As if to redeem himself for his showing in the Welch-won mile, Northrop came back to run a powerful last leg in the Crimson's two mile relay team which surprised most of the spectators with a dazzling 7 minutes 59.6 second showing, turning back the Elis who had done about that time at the Millrose games. This was the only event the Harvard managed to get a first in during the meet.

Likewise encouraging was the showing of the weight men in the afternoon, for both Bort Littman and Steve Bronnan came in to gain second places in the shot and weight throws respectively, although both of them were well back of the winners, Yale's thrower John Harvard Castle and the Big Green's putter Geniawiez.

Dartmouth won the meet in the dash and hurdles with their amazing showing of picking up a first and second in each event which gave them a 16 point jump on the other teams. They ended up with 34 1/2 points, while Yale's strength in some field events proved an infinitesimal amount better than Cornell's on the track the Elis getting 29 3/4, the Ithacans 92. Harvard scored 23 points.

Vaulter Win Pettingell and jumper Bob Haydock trailed Elis Badman and Harding, the Blue high jumper barely clearing 6 feet 3 inches. Harding missed his three tries to set a record at 14 feet.
