Opening its first season as a major sport, Coach Wes Fesler's Varsity basketball team will meet the M. I. T. hoopsters at 8:45 o'clock this evening in the Indoor Athletic Building.
In the Crimson lineup tonight there will be three members of last year's starting quintet, Captain Vernon Struck, Red Lowman, and Ulysses Lupien. Struck and Lupien will be at their customary guard positions, while Lowman is scheduled to start at forward where he has starred for two years.
Herrick at Center
Filling the center post left vacant by graduation of Captain Bill Gray will be John Herrick who saw considerable service last season as Gray's understudy.
Captain of the Freshman team last year, Charlie Lutz has been awarded a starting position at forward against the Engineers. This post was held by Leavitt White who graduated last spring and who captained the five two years ago.
For M. I. T., Oliver Kangas and Mike Berasimchuk will be the forwards, Paul Schneider at center, and Hyman Katz and Vernon Lippett as guards. Also likely to see action are John Dampeer and, Dick Wille at guard, Chester Legg and Arnie Litman at forward, and Fred Hockel at either position. In case substitution for Herrick is necessary, Lowman will probably be switched from forward. Freshmen Play First The Yardling cagers will meet the Tech Freshmen at 7:30 o'clock in the preliminaray to the Varsity clash in their opening game of the season. Coach Skip Stahley has tentatively selected Gene Levett and Harold Lub chansky to start at the forward posts, with Homer Peabody in at center. The guards in all probability will be Ray Holt and Wally Chessman. Although this quintet has not had the chance to work together yet, Stahley is looking for a fairly creditable performance. He feels definitely that the team has a good deal of potential power.
