ENGINEERS FIRST FOE OF POWERFUL SEXTET AT ARENA

With the enviable record of last year's hockey team before them, the Varsity Hockey team will open their season against George Owen's M. I. T. puck chasers tonight at the Boston Arena at 8.30 o'clock.

The opening face-off will be preceded by the first period of the game starting at 8 o'clock between Clark Hodder's Freshman team and Framingham High.

Too Strong For Tech

M. I. T. should not provide very strong opposition to the Stubbsmen, although they demonstrated surprising strength last week while bowing to B. U. 2-1. But fortunately their sensational new goalie, George Carnick, will not be in the nets because of a death in his family. Replacing him will be Bob Miliar who has shown up well despite lack of practice.

Coach Joe Stubbs has one of the most promising squads in years and one which has every possibility of measuring up to last year's outfit which lost only to powerful McGill and won the Quadrangular Hockey League title. With a galaxy of stars, returning lettermen, and new prospects, the team should not feel the loss of George Ford, Louis Carr, Leo Ecker, and Specs Mahoney too greatly.

Starting Lineup

George Roberts, Johnny Mechem, and Ned Cutter will answer the opening whistle on the Crimson's first forward line. These men have been working together on the Varsity since their Sophomore year, except for a short time last year when Mechem worked with Ford and Harding in the absence of Louis Carr.

Behind them Captain Traf Hicks and Gene Emerson will start at the points. Hicks ordinarily pairs with Russ Allen, but the latter is still favoring his injury incurred in the Princeton game and will not dress for tonight's encounter. He is expected to be ready for full time duty after Christmas. Hicks is looking better than ever this season, and Emerson, an alternate defenseman last year, is quite competent of filling Allen's shoes.

Skeets Canterbury has selected Vint Freedley, last year's Freshman goalie, to start in the Crimson net. The goalie position has been the most pressing problem so far this year and the issue is by no means settled. Howard Johnson is the other net minder dressing for tonight's game.

Harding Centers Third

The second line will be composed of Joe Patrick at center with Win Jameson and Ralph Pope on the wings. They worked together for the greater part of last season on the third line. Austic Harding has been moved from his wing position on the first line of last year to center on the third line. This move will give Harvard three strong combinations and also put Harding at his natural position.

Charlie Houghton and Bill Coleman will be the defense spares. Houghton paired with Emerson in the same capacity last year, while Coleman is up from the Freshmen where he played a wing on the second line last year.

Freshman Average

Coach Hodder's Freshman team is unpredictable. It is considered about average with no outstanding stars. It will be possible to tell a little more about its possibilities after watching it in action tonight. The Yardlings too have a great record to live up to, although Hodder's thirty game victory streak was once shattered last year. However they have defeated their Yale opponents for the past six years.

Starting for the Freshmen tonight against Framingham will be: Burton, Cox and Willets in the line, Gray and Butt at defense, and Hanford in the goal
