STUDENT COUNCIL NAMES MERCER AS '41 AFFAIRS AIDE

Douglas Mercer '40, of Brookline, was appointed assistant to J. Spence Harvin '39, representative in charge of Freshman Affairs, at a regular meeting of the Student Council last night.

Mercer was chairman of the Union Committee last year and is vice-president of his Class. With Harvin he succeeds the pair of Francis Keppel '38 and Richard P. Hedblom '39, who acted in a similar advisory capacity in 1936-37.

Swimming Status

Also last night a vote determined to continue the investigation, held over from last year, of the status of swimming as a minor or possible major sport.

A committee of Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. '88, chairman, C. Lee Burwell '89 and F. Austin Harding, Jr. '89 will consider the mermen's case and the amount of its student support

Commencement Program

Named to investigate the Commencement program of Harvard College, with emphasis on the role played by the graduating class, was a second committee, comprising Morris Earle '88, chairman, Wlley E. Mayne '38, and C. Russell Allen '38.

Fund for the Future

Derived from funds in its possession not allocated to other purposes, and consisting in part of a profit on the 1940 Red Book, $1000 has been set aside as an interest bearing savings account.

Accrument from this money, subject to recall by vote of the Council, will go towards additional scholarships which may be needed in future years.

Because of the comparatively small demand on the scholarship funds this year the Council felt justified in taking this step.

To China and Cornell

Also voted last night were an appropriation of $50 for the relief of universities in China, and a decision to send a Harvard representative to a conference of Eastern College Student Councils at Cornell this week-end.
