"Both science and democracy are the children of Christianity," William E. Hocking '01, Alford Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity, said last night in the concluding address in the "Outlines of Christianity" series in Emerson D.

Citing the powerful role that Christianity has played in the development of Western civilization, Professor Hocking claimed that through its emphasis on the individuality of the soul, the Medieval Church fostered the growing conception of political rights.

Of the influence of Christianity in the future, he concluded, "The effect will be there, quite out of sight, in the deepest region of human consciousness."
