Can Harvard Down Eli and Tiger Harriers Today?

With Princeton and Yale running this afternoon, Coach Jaakko Mikkola stated yesterday that this would be "one of the hardest races I have seen around here for a long time." At 3 o'clock Harvard, Yale, and Princeton Varsity and Freshman teams line up at the start for the five mile run which will be the sixth annual triangular cross country meet between the three schools.

And Princeton and Yale have already shown themselves to be two of the best cross country teams running. Princeton is unbeaten, having put down New York University, Columbia, Rutgers, and Navy over the long distances. Yale has been defeated, but only once, by a powerful Dartmouth team which also two weeks ago took Harvard's measure.

Outstanding for the Orange and Black is Captain Frederick Rosengarten '38, who has led more than one field to the finish. Second to him is Peter Bradley '39, and eight other good men follow.

Last Saturday in New York in a quadrangular meet with Dartmouth, Cornell, and Columbia, Yale finished a close second to Dartmouth, 38 to 43. Two weeks ago Dartmouth beat Harvard 27 to 30.

Yale has a good harrier in its captain, Joseph C. Fox. Almost as good are Ronald Watson '39 and William Watson '40. Lindsey Lovejoy should be close up to his teammates.

As for the home team, they, too, are certainly rated in the class of their opponents. Captain John W. Erhard will undoubtedly be the first Crimson man in.

Pen Tuttle, a Sophomore, is at present second to his captain. Number third man is doubtful. Roswell Brayton '39 and Bill Wright '38 will fight that out this afternoon as they have all season.

The other six men that will represent the Varsity this afternoon are George P. Gardner '39; Alexander C. Northrop '38; Francis M. Rivinus, Jr. '38; Frank L. Porter, Jr. '40; Clifton D. Stevens '40; and Edmund C. Childs, Jr. '40.

The Freshmen have their race separate, running a shorter distance totaling two and six-tenths miles. Both Yale and Princeton have good teams this year. The Princeton yearlings beat Columbia 15 to 40 last Saturday, and Yale Freshmen beat Dartmouth 25 to 30.

The ten Freshmen entered by Coach Mikkola today are: Captain Robert B. Nichols; Charles H. Oldfather; Joseph R. McLoughlin; David H. Mitchell; Lee A. Dimond; Charles D. Howell; Malcolm D. Campbell, Jr.; Robert N. Elwell; De Coursey Fales, Jr.; and Johnson Parker. Nichols and Oldfather have been outstanding to date.
