A fair and warmer day saw the University Handicap Track Meet to a successful conclusion yesterday. Postponed last Thursday because of rain the remaining events were run off yesterday under the supervision of Assistant Coach Bill Neufeld.
All students in the University were allowed to enter in the meet. Handicaps were allotted not only on the basis of past performance and experience, but also in consideration of the performing shape the runner or field event man was in.
A week ago the shot put, the pole vault, 35-pound weight throw, and the high jump were held in the Carey Cage. And today Coach Neufeld conducted the broad jump, the 80-yard high hurdles, the 120-yard low hurdles, the 160-yard dash, the 80-yard dash, the half-mile, and the 440.
Winner of the broad jump was Freshman Robert Partlow. Prominent in his class as a sprinter Partlow's best and winning jump was 20 feet. Runner-up was Fred Ulen '39, who, with the benefit of a 10 inch handicap was put down for 19 feet, eight inches. Paul Morgan '39, and Sparks Sorlien '39 followed third and fourth.
In the 80-yard high hurdles John Sparrow '38 won first place in 11.1 seconds. Bill Wilson '41 was second, and a first year Divinity student, William Kring, was third. The 130-yard low hurdles were won by graduate student Mitchell, whose time was 13.6 John Sparrow was second, William Kring third, and Wilson fourth.
Sparks Sorlien took the 160-yard dash in 17 seconds fiat. Sorlien is a Varsity sprinter and broad-jumper. Freshman Robert Russell, a middle distance man, was second to Sorlien, and R. H. Abernathy, Jr. '41 was third. The 80-yard dash was won by F. G. Neal in 8.4 seconds. Partlow and Sorlien were second and third.
In the 880 Henry Stephens '41 led the field in 2 minutes, 19 seconds. Varsity 440 runner Fuzzy Furse '38 was second. Over the 440 distance V. L. Phillips 1G.B. made the best time--55 seconds. Joe Donnelly '41 was second, and R. B. Ridder followed.
