Two records were chattered today by Holy Cross cross country runners when their Freshman team, consisting of five men, defeated the Crimson Freshmen, and the Harvard Varsity overcame the purple 26 to 31.
At the finish of the Varsity four mile race, Sullivan of Holy Cross just beat Captain John W. Erhard '38 to the tape, setting a new record of 22 minutes, 50 seconds for the course. Pen Tuttle, Sophomore two miler, followed his captain in to gain third place.
Holy Cross men came in fourth and fifth, while following them came four of Jaakko Mikkola's runners, Bill Wright '38, Roswell Brayton '39, Francis M. Rivinue '38, and Frank L. Porter '40.
The Freshmen fared not so well. The Holy Cross first year men defeated them with their five entries 21 to 34. The winning time over the shorter Freshman course which measures about two and six tenths miles was 13 minutes and 22 seconds, breaking the old record by six-seconds.
The Holy Cross yearlings gained the first two places, while R. B. Nichols and C. D. Oldfather arrived third and fourth for the Crimson. The remaining three Holy Cross men followed, thus assuring victory for the visitors.
Next Friday Dartmouth and New Hampshire race the Crimson Varsity and Freshmen. Coach Jaakko Mikkola states that both visiting teams are very strong.
