$764,114 IS AMOUNT OF NIEMAN GIFT RECEIVED BY UNIVERSITY SO FAR

UNIVERSITY DENIES NEW HISTORY, ENGLISH COURSES

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Following on the heels of the announcement that the University had received the Nieman bequest "in part" came the statement yesterday that $764,114 was the actual amount received so far.

Henry L. Shattuck '01, treasurer of the Corporation, gave the figure of $1,200,000 as his estimate as to the total legacy which Harvard would receive through the will of the late Mrs. Lucius W. Nieman, of Milwaukee.

University officials denied that the money would be used for current history courses or for courses in English composition. They admitted, however, that plans are now being studied so that the wishes of the donor may be most effectively realized.

Specifically Mrs. Nieman left the money "to promote and elevate the standards of journalism in the United States."
