One of the best known modern scholars of the fine arts Dr. Johnny A. E. Roosval, Professor of the History of Art at the University of Stockholm, Sweden, and Director of the Art Institute of Stockholm, has been chosen Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry. He will give a series of eight public lectures on "The Poetry of Chiaroscuro," during the months November through February.
Medieval Scholar
Professor Roosval, who will fill one of the most important visiting chairs, is, at 57, a foremost student of the architecture and sculpture of the Middle Ages, and has brought to the attention of scholars many little known masterpieces of Swedish art.
His studies over the past twenty-five years have focused largely on stone sculpture and religious works of art found in the island county Gotland in south-eastern Sweden, which archaeologists belive has been one of mankind's most active population centers since the Stone Age. At the conclusion of his lecture series, Dr. Roosval will conduct a special study group for a small number of graduate students in the fine arts.
Many Visitors
Altogether the university's visiting staff will number fifteen noted scholars and scientist, representing institutions in the United States, and in England, France, Canada, Germany, Sweden, and Russia. Two of these were participants in the Harvard Tercentenary Conference of Arts of Sciences, during the first two weeks of September; and of the remainder, eight are now, or have been, full professors in their universities.
