Brainerd Introduces Proposal but Then Changes and Casts Deciding Vote at Last Minute

Following a heated discussion at Phillips Brooks House last night, the Harvard Student Union defeated, by the close margin of 25-24, a resolution urging President Conant to withdraw Harvard's representative to the 550th anniversary celebration at Heidelberg University this June.

This unexpected turn of events took place when Robert S. Brainerd '38, who introduced the proposal, was persuaded by the opposition to change his vote at the last minute. Four ballots were necessary before the final decision was reached.

As the result of a motion by D. Boone Schirmer '37, the Union decided to organize a committee to investigate reactionary tendencies in the Sociology Department. Another committee will be formed to plan for the participation of the H.S.U. in the Tercentenary celebration next September.
