Undefeated Freshman Baseball Team Piled Up Unique Record in Harvard's Athletic History

No team in Harvard athletic history has ever played as many games in as short a period of time as did this year's undefeated Freshman baseball team. Twenty-one contests were run off in forty-three playing days, which meant a game every other day for the Yardlings. The last Harvard aggregation in any sport to have such a lengthy schedule was the Varsity baseball nine back in 1922, when 26 encounters were played, over a period, however, of three months.

To add to the distinction of Coach Samborski's nine no Harvard team had ever before been undefeated while carrying such a list of games and there has been no baseball team with a clean slate since 1927, when the Freshmen were unbeaten in nine games.

Scoring 238 runs to their opponents '98, the team was noted throughout the year for its ability to hit in the pinches and to overcome six and seven run deficits, as was done in the Staunton, Dean, and Holy Cross games.

Batting averages of the players who were in most of the games shows where the strength of the team lay. Slugging Lupe Lupien who knocked out eight home runs during the season, led all others by a wide margin, gaining a 494 average.

The pitching staff, though not always as steady as might be desired was usually able to cope with all opponents. Slim Curtise bore the burden of the hurling, gaining nine victories.
