As the result of a two days campaign for members, the Harvard Post of the Veterans of Future Wars has enrolled approximately 200 students, with the movement spreading rapidly. Active campaigning has thus far been limited to the Union, as the largest center in the University, but other enlistment centers will be established in the Houses within the next few days.
With more than 200 posts in colleges throughout the country and a membership of 22,000 the national organization of the VFW has reached far greater proportions than ever was expected. The history and origins of the movement are one of the subjects of the "March of Time" Newsreel appearing later this month.
Mass Meeting Planned
Plans are being discussed for a mass demonstration to be held indoors here on Patriot's Day, Monday, April 30. This is expected to be a Super-Patriotic meeting at which the recently organized Harvard Post V.F.W. Band will play a special program of music.
"Our demands for immediate cash payment of the $1,000 bonus due 1965 as Veterans of Future Wars are in full accordance with the sound economic principles and just precedents established by the older veterans' organizations," said Rolf Kaltenborn '37, who has been appointed Post Commander in an interview last night.
"Let us, the rising generation, carry on the torch of patriotism which the American Legion has borne so successfully in the past," he continued. "The recent passage of the Soldier's Bonus in Congress has proven that no longer is our government subject merely to individual selfish pressure but to just and rightful demands of deserving groups."
Hearst Applauded
"It is gross slander to say that we are casting aspersions at either the American Legion or the Veterans of Foreign Wars. We desire to cooporate with them to the fullest extent. Our aims, ideals, and purposes are identical.
"We applaud the support of Mr. William R. Hearst to past honus demands and feel sure he is in sympathy with our patriotic cause."
