MITTMEN BEAT ARMY 5-3 BEFORE CROWD OF 1800

Robertson Knocks Out Wells in Most Active Bout of Contest--Ward and Smith Are Victorious

Winning its sixth consecutive victory of the season, the Crimson Varsity boxing team scored a 5-3 win over the Army mittmen in the Indoor Athletic Building Saturday afternoon before a capacity crowd of 1800, the largest ever to attend an intercollegiate boxing match in New England.

The decisive bout of the match was in the 175-pound class, in which Gordon Robertson faced Joe Wells of the Cadets. Prior to this battle the score had been 3 all. Robertson, fighting in a class above his weight, traded punches vigorously with the Army man in a bout which contained more action than any other on the program.

The referee stopped the contest in the third round, after Wells had gone down for a count of seven from a hard blow on the chin dealt him by the Crimson boxer.

Another nice performance was turned in by Pete Ward, who is again boxing consistently and well after his lay-off due to appendicitis last year, and only two appearances the season. Ward defeated Meaney, the Army captain, by decision.

Another contestant who fought out of his class was Bill Smith, Crimson captain, who usually competes in the 165 or 175-pound divisions, but who proved too much for Army's Isbell.
