He was born in Rome, son of Edward B.T. Spencer, professor of Greek at Grinnell since 1916. Twice as his father's assistant he made European tours. After postgraduate work at Harvard, he received fellowships that enabled him to study a Paris and Germany.

A Phi Beta Kappa, Dr. Spencer brings to Ethiopia a brilliant record in scholarship and a formidable amount of practical experience.
