COUNCIL TO STUDY PROBLEM OF 1939 EATING IN HOUSES

Limited Plan Last Year Worked Well and Extension of Privilege Asked This Spring

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Following the petition last November by 300 Freshmen asking that they be allowed to eat more meals in the Houses before the assignments are made in the spring, a Student Council Committee has been appointed to investigate the matter, interview House Masters, and work out some solution.

Robert S. Playfair '36 and Robert Dunn '37 are the two Student Council men handling the investigation, and their report will be handed to the Dean's office in the next few weeks.

More Meals Asked

The Freshman petition asked that "a certain number of meals in the Houses every week with upper class friends without further charge" be allowed. Further, Freshmen would be permitted to eat in the Houses for several months before the room assignments were made.

Last year there was an arrangement whereby first year men eating in the Union might signify their desire to eat in the Houses by signing in their dining room. This was allowed, however, only during the few weeks preceding the filing of House applications; each man was allowed to eat only two times in each House.

Extension Asked

This limited plan worked satisfactorily last spring, and it is now thought that an extension could be made to include the whole second half year and a greater number of meals.
