Publicity gags of press agents are always good for another picture when Hollywood production schedules are lagging. Latest edition of this stock subject is "Garden of the Moon." Even the angle adopted here, the creation of a fake Indian maharaja to help plug an unknown orchestra, is anything but the result of a brilliant inspiration. Fortunately, the action frequently moves at a fast and funny pace; but equally unfortunately, the humor is invariably of the delayed reaction type, where the butt of a wisecrack absorbs it five minutes later. Pat O'Brien, who makes a startling reversal of type by playing the part of a hard-boiled-guy-with-a-heart-of-gold, is the principal recommendation, although one wishes that he would occasionally lower his voice.

"Girls On Probation" definitely does not live up to its advertisements, which depict a girl of decidedly sensuous cast smoking a cigarette in the approved seductive manner. It is a routine tale of woe, in which the heroine is framed by endless coincidences.
