Smeterlin to Give a Chopin Program; Ballet Russe Here Next Week

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Boston Symphony is giving concerts in New York this week-end and Symphony Hall will be empty until Sunday afternoon when the very fine Polish pianist, Jan Smeterlin, is to give a Chopin recital. Mr. Smeterlin is probably the foremost living exponent of Chopin's works and his recitals are always marked by the best musical taste as well as by complete technical competence. His program includes the popular Fantasie Opus 49 and Sonata Opus 35 in B flat minor.

Starting next Tuesday evening and running through Saturday the Monte Carlo Ballet Russe is to give eight performances at the Opera House. This company although not of the proportions of the Diaghiley group has inherited and maintained the great ballet traditions and is now the finest to be seen on any stage. Its repertoire includes music by the great masters as well as by the moderns.

Orchestral Concerts

Tonight in Sanders Theatre the State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexander Thiede is to present a program consisting of three numbers by Bach (Choral Prelude from "The Little Organ Book", Fantasy and Fugue in G minor, Toccata and Fugue in D minor), Mozart's A major Violin Concerto, and Wotan's Farewell and the Fire Music from "Die Walkure". On Monday night in Jordan Hall, the Orchestra of the New England Conservatory of Music is to perform the prelude to John Knowles Paine's "Oedipus Tyrannus", three excerpts from John Alden Carpenter's "Adventures in a Perambulator", and other interesting works.
