The decision of the Phillips Brooks House Cabinet to employ the annual four hundred dollar scholarship for the benefit of the Grenfell Mission abandons one excellent policy only to fulfill another. In past years the Chairman of the Foreign Student Committee has been given the money with the understanding that upon his return from his summer travels he will help the foreign students here in the University. That plan, in their own words, has been overwhelmingly successful for the individuals who received the scholarship. But the second aspect, in spite of honest effort, has failed for the simple reason that no one student, even another Jim Farley, can be Social Secretary, State Department, and Reception Committee all in one for the great number of foreign students in Cambridge.
The four hundred dollars will now go to the Grenfell Mission to pay the summer expenses of three Harvard men, one embryo dentist or doctor, and two undergraduates. The Grenfell Post in Labrador is famous all over the world. Its forces have been bolstered up every summer by amateur volunteers who are willing to pay for the privilege of service that runs from the hard physical labor of unloading provisions to curing Eskimo diseases. Although the new plan is frankly an experiment, and if it fails, the disposition of the fund will go back into the hands of the Cabinet; still it is no longer ninety-eight per cent one way and two the other. The nickel now has both a "heads" and a "tails".
