CONDUCTORS SCHILLER, WILLIAMS WIN PRAISE

Parading their wares to the accompaniment of a full orchestra, eight students tried out for assistant conductor of the Pierian Sodality at a competition held in Sanders Theatre last night.

Of these Malcolm H. Holmes '28, director, tentatively selected four for a final contest to be held next month. Heading the quartet is the pair of Jonathan Schiller 2G and Chester W. Williams 1G, who received first rank for their productions of parts of Mozart's Symphony in G Minor.

Egbert W. Fischer 1G and John S. Morgan '39 also earned places in the finals by their conductorship of Haydn's Second Symphony in D Major and the second movement of the same composer's Surprise.

In addition to the men retained, others who led last night were: William W. Austin '39, Edwin G. Davis, Jr. '38, Leonard Hernstein '39, and Gerald E. Deskin '40.

Besides the contest for assistant conductor, the Pierian is currently running a competition for students in composition. All composers are invited to submit scores of works for full, chamber, or string orchestra before the Christmas recess.
