CONANT CREATES NEW FIELD FOR DOCTORATE

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE OF SIX MAJOR FIELDS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Maintaining that "Until we have an adequate survey of our intellectual history, we cannot except the world at large to understand the importance of the scholar's contribution to civilization," President Conant yesterday announced the creation of a new Ph.D. degree in the History of Science and Learning."

The call for teachers in this field at present far exceeds the supply, it is held, because of a lack of such specialized graduate study.

The degree requires a knowledge of "six major fields," not named in the announcement. Study will have three major divisions, the philological, the historical, and the philosophical.
