Concluding the fencing season for 1935, Captain Webster F. Williams, Jr. '35 and Frederick W. Sands '37 took top honors in the University championship events held in the Indoor Athletic Building Thursday afternoon.
Williams outpointed Abraham Stern 1L to capture the title in the Epee class, while Sands wielded the sabre for his defeat of Richard Mogran, IV '36. On the previous day Gilbert Kerlin 2L had won the championship in the foils division.
Veteran of a successful campaign during which the team won seven engagements and bowed only to Navy and Yale, Phillip Eugene Lilienthal '36 of New York City, has been elected captain to succeed Williams next year. John Frederick Reppun '36, of Honolulu, will manage the 1936 swordsmen.
The summary of the University champions:
Epee: Won by Webster F. Williams, Jr. '35; second, Abraham Stern 1L; third Edward E. Langeneau '35.
Sabre: Won by Frederick W. Sands '37; second, Richard Morgan, IV '37; third, Phillip E. Lilienthal '3G.
Foils: Won by Gilbert Kerlin 2L; second, Lilienthal; third, Henry B. Wesselman 3L.
