While classrooms are desolate and empty during vacation, Newell Boat House will be open for business as usual with about 75 men rowing daily. Coach Charlie Whiteside is keeping three crews, Bert Haines will be watching over two first year boats, and Howard Hoople will be nursing along two loads of Varsity lightweights and one of Freshman.
German measles has taken its toll in crew as elsewhere and Bobbie Cutler, stroke of the second Varsity boat, was unable to report yesterday and is not expected to appear until near the end of next week. Ced Francis, stroke of last year's combination crew, has been promoted from the third boat to take his place, and Roger Cutler, stroke of last year's Freshman shell, has been moved from his position as number two man in the second crew and will replace Francis as stroke of the third.
The seatings in the first Varsity boat are as follows: stroke, Samuel S. Drury, Jr. '35; 7, Leonard P. Eliel '36; 6, Edward B. Simmons '37; 5, Thomas H. Choate '37; 4, James E. Gardner '36; 3, Henry Saltonstall '35; 2, John P. Austin '37; bow, Raymond S. Clark '36; and cox, Edward H. Bennett, Jr. '37.
The second or Jayvee boat carries the following: stroke, Cedric E. Francis '37; 7, Philip V. Bray '35; 6, George T. Keyes '35; 5, Henry F. Atherton, Jr. '36; 4, Oliver K. Scott '37; 3, Lawrence Mills '37; 2, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr. '37; bow, William C. Haskins '37; and cox, Thomas H. Hunter '35.
The third boat seating reads: stroke, Roger W. Cutler. Jr. '37; 7, Robert B. Watson '37; 6, Robert M. Drysdale, Jr. '36; 5, William S. Burton '36; 4, Richard Stern '37; 3, William W. Prout '36; 2, Franklin A. Reece, Jr. '35; bow, Talbot Rantoul '36; and cox, Octavius R. Cohen, Jr. '37.
Coach Hoople has not yet made up his mind as to which is the first Varsity fifty boat and which is second. The crew stroked by Whitney has more power than that stroked by Eaton but Eaton's is smoother and which will prove the fastest is still a moot point. The seatings follow: stroke, Lawrence V. Eaton '36; 7, Hayden Estey '36; John L. Swasey '35; 5, Edward T. Gignoux '35; 4, John L. Lyman '37; 3, Morris Piaelzer, 2nd '35; 2, Eliot Pierce '36; bow, Robert S. Chafee '36; and cox, Edward T. Barker '37. The other boat--stroke, Thomas H. Whitney '35; 7, Mark H. Dall '37; 6, Dunbar Carpenter '37; 5, Samuel Adams '37; 4, Alexander H. Bill, Jr. '35; 3, Piper; 2, George E. Hall '37; bow, Perry; and cox, Richard P. Harmon '35.
Freshman Boatings
The yearlings under Bert which will probably be chosen to stay are the present first two crews, but Bort is not definite about the positions and there will probably be some changes at the end of today's row. Chace, stroke of the first boat, cut his hand yesterday and will be on the injured list most of vacation it is thought. The tentative seatings in the first boat are: stroke, Edgar B. Van Winkle, 2nd; 7, Edmund S. Twining, Jr.; 6, Douglas Erickson; 5, John S. Radway; 4, Scott; 3, John Gardiner; 2, Clark; bow, Peter T. Brooks; and cox, White. The second boat is as follows: stroke, John L. Senior, Jr.; 7, Hamill; 6, B. G. Leighton, Jr.; 5, Fellows D. Gardner; 4, Renouf Russell; 3, Godfrey; 2, MacVickar; bow, Kernan; and cox, Alden S. Bloget, Jr.
The Freshman 150 pound crew that will probably stay is scated as follows: stroke, George von L. Meyer, 3rd; 7, William B. Winkler; 6, Robert G. Walker, Jr.; 5, William H. Brown; 4, A. McCleman; 3, Charles K. Lawrence; 3, McGrane; bow, David R. Donovan; and cox, Joseph M. Valentine
