VARSITY ROWERS TAKE WORK-OUT IN NEW GYM

Two Tentatively Selected Crews Are Given Season's First Practice at Oars In Tank

Two tentative Varsity crews are daily churning the waters of the tank under the corrective eye of Coach Charlie Whiteside, in preparation for the first race of the season with Princeton, on Saturday, April 27. Only three men have been barred from the squad because of probation requirements.

The first crew is: stroke, Samuel S. Drury, Jr. '35; seven, Leonard P. Eliel '36; six, John P. Austin '37; five, Thomas H. Choate '37; four, James E. Gardner, Jr. '36; three, George L. Haskins '35; two, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr. '37; bow, Raymond S. Clark '36.

The second varsity oarsmen are" stroke, Robert B. Cutler '36, seven, Lawrence Mills '37; six, Oliver K. Scott '37; five, Robert B. Watson '37; four, Robert M. Drysdale, Jr. '36; three, Robert M. Parker, Jr. '37; two, Roger W. Cutler, Jr. '37; and bow, Talbot Rantoul '36.

The reason given by Whiteside for the early selection of crews is the apparent lateness of the spring. There are still 20 inches of ice on the Charles, and it is the coach's opinion that he will not be able top launch a shell before March 20, a comparatively late date. He is therefore experimenting with several combinations in the tank so as to waste as little time as possible when the ice does break.

Bert Haines is also whipping the Freshman blade prospects into shape in the Newell Boat House. For these Freshman who are not retained on the squad, three clubs will be formed by dividing up the dormitories in the yard and races will be held at the end of the season. Everyone will be accommodated.
