Reeding an informal request from University Hall, Tan Sargent, dexterous racquet-wielder of the squash team and intercollegiate champion, will not defend his title in the Intercollegiate Squash Tournament this week-end.
Sargent explained that the College disapproves of students touring all the tournaments, and pointed out that he has already played in the Gold Racquet Tournament in New York, the Laphan Trophy in Montreal, the Nationals in Pittsburgh, and the Harvard-Princeton match at Princeton. Harry Cowles, the coach, advised him to choose between the Intercollegiates and the Nationals and Sargent went to Pittsburgh, allured by the national title. He qualified for the semi-final round, and then was defeated by Neil J. Sullivan.
The three Crimson entries for the tournament will be Jimmy Glidden. Dick Gilder, and Stan Haskins. Glidden has enjoyed an extremely successful season. He was the winner of the Massachusetts State Open Tournament in January, and gained the quarterfinals in the Nationals. Out of eight encounters in the state league matches, Sargent lost only one. He is conceded an excellent chance of winning the Intercollegiates.
