COACH WELCOMED AT VARSITY CLUB DINER IN UNION

A host of Harvard athletes, past and present, well over 200 strong cheered and applauded, Dick Harlow the new Crimson football coach at the first welcoming banquet for him in the Harvard Union last night.

So large was the crowd which turned out to meet and welcome the new mentor that the diner was held in the Union rather than in the Varsity Club where it was originally scheduled.

"I think that he is the best man we could have to coach our football team here," was the way in which William J. Bingham '16, Director of Athletics expressed the sentiment which seemed to pervade the audience.

Introduction of the speakers of the evening were made by Leo H. Leary '04. The first speaker was Captain J. Robert Haley '36, who will lead Harlow's first Crimson eleven.

Haley declared that he looked for a new era of Harvard football when the Crimson would take its deserved position in the football world. He stated that he looked for a closer cooperation and coordination between graduates and undergraduates in the matter of athletics.

Bingham, in his speech expressed his appreciation to the football men with home he had consulted in the selection of the new coach and declared that he considered Harlow the best man for the position.

Awards of trophies for excellence in crew, hockey, and baseball were made by Henry W. Clark '23, assistant director of athletics.

Francis H. Glesson '34 of Newton was presented the Wingate Memorial Cup: Charles J. Nevin '34 of Caldwell, New Jersey, the Barrett Wendell Junior Trophy Bat; Paul deB. deGive '34 of Atlanta, Georgia, the John Tudor Memorial Hockey Cup; John Ware, Jr. '34 of Milton, the Angier Hockey Trophy; Thomas H. Choate '37 of Pleasantville, New York. The Bruce Finally Vanderveer Trophy in rowing; and Leonard P. Eliel '36, the Roger W. Cutler Crew Cup.
