RIVINUS IS WINNER IN CROSS COUNTRY HANDICAP GRIND

Plodding over a rain-soaked course, Francis M. Rivinus '38, yesterday capitalized on a four-minute handicap and splashed his way to victory in the University Cross Country Handicap Meet, leading G. M. Olive '39 to the finish line by 14 seconds.

The harriers were separated into five groups, each starting at different intervals. Rivinus was among the second group which toed the mark two minutes after the first starters, who enjoyed a six-minute advantage over the regular Varsity men.

Leonard C. Leen '36 was the first of the Varsity to complete the course, but was unable to overcome the advantage of those who had a handicap.

The various handicap groups kept almost completely segregated for the first mile, but as the pack turned into the cemetery, the gaps closed rapidly. At the half-way mark, J. F. Stern '39 was leading, but with Loewi and Edward A. Drew '37 right on his heels. All three were weakening visibly.

The first five places were evident by the time the race track was reached as Rivinus, Olive, D. Smith '39, 'Lawson' and Drew filed by with almost 30 seconds interval between them.
