Distinct increases in the enrollment of English 28, Economics A, and Geology 1 were disclosed in the preliminary figures on Freshman courses released by University Hall yesterday afternoon. The most significant losses in enrollment have been felt by French 2 and English 79 which both have 102 men less than last year.

English 28 which has undergone a reorganization under the hands of James B. Munn, professor of English, has gained the largest number of entrants, 110, and has a total enrollment of 292. The growing popularity of Economics during the last few years shows its result in the 82 men who have increased its members from 435 to 517. Geology has 61 more students than last year, making a total of 344.

Radical changes are apparent in the philosophy courses where Philosophy 1a has been abandoned and Philosophy B has risen in its place to meet the needs of Freshmen. This course has a total enrollment of 417 while its sister course, Philosophy A has made slight gains to reach 253. The new Fine Arts course, 1b, shows strong popularity since 212 men have elected to take it.

History 1 remains at the top of the list with a considerable edge on its nearest competitor. 830 Freshmen have elected it this year which marks a gain of two. Government 1 reveals but little change in its status of last year. It has 525 entrants rather than 536.

German A, the waterloo of many first-year men, is down to 401 from 465. Although Naval Science remains stable, Military Science 1 continues to lose ground with only 50 students enrolled this year.

The tentative enrolment of the large courses for the past three years is as follows:   1934  1933  1932 English 28  292  182  230 English 79  148  250  125 English A-2  82  91  78 English A-1  667  580  745 Economics A  517  435  399 Government 1  525  536  594 History 1  830  828  631 Mil.
