GUNDLACH IS OUT OF PRACTICE FOR TWO WEEK PERIOD

A solemn silence hung over Soldier Field yesterday afternoon when the announcement was made that Captain Herman Gundlach '35, who was injured in a scrimmage on the day before, was hurt more seriously than at first expected and will be out for two weeks.

Out of Bates Game

This loss of one of the Crimson's most popular captains and a staunch bulwark in the center of the Varsity line casts a gloom over the not-too-bright prospects of the football team. The two weeks of enforced absence from practice sessions will keep Gundy out of the Bates game, and will force the coaches to use him carefully if he is to be ready for the Brown game.

Gundlach was hurt early in the scrimmage with the Jayvees on Thursday and was forced to leave the field. At first the injury seemed to be very serious, but reassuring reports were issued yesterday and the stocky captain declared that he would be in uniform today.

Overnight the leg got worse, however, and today he was advised to keep out of action for at least two weeks.

Guard Squad Depleted

With the loss of Paul VanCleve and Gundlach within the last two days, Coach Adam Walsh was faced with the problem of trying to fill up the squad in this department. Frank Schumann is the only regular left in action. Frank Casale has alternated between center and guard during his football career, so that he could be used to fill in. But it would be robbing Peter to pay Paul. As yet no one has been brought up from the Junior Varsity.

Yesterday Coach Walsh used Jones and Blatchford in the guard positions, but neither one of these newcomers can fill the gap left by Gundlach's injury. Bob Brookings, Schumann, Casale, and Husband are the only ones left who have proved themselves of Varsity calibre.

Yesterday was a routine day, consisting mostly of work on fundamentals and assignment drills, topped off by a scrimmage late in the afternoon between Team C and the Jayvees. This little tiff, which was both offensive and defensive, was staged to give those who had failed to get into the scrimmage on the day before, a chance to show their wares.
