VARSITY HITS STRIDE IN INTERESTING VICTORY

PLAY DARTMOUTH ON SATURDAY IN LEAGUE AFFAIR

Prospects for the Dartmouth and Yale games looked considerably brighter after the Varsity's 12-inning marathon win over Holy Cross on Saturday. In that 8-7 victory the Mitchellmen showed again that while they aren't brilliant team, they do have their big moments.

All spring the Crimson has been plugging along, dropping several unnecessary games and stretching the error department, but every now and then suddenly going full out. At the time of the Princeton and Cornell games it looked as if they had wiped out their early season weaknesses and were going to be at the top of the League. But since then there's been a slump that was broken only last Wednesday by a very fine win over Brown.

With two successive victories they're rolling again, and just in time, for Harvard jumps back into League competition on Saturday against Dartmouth. The Holy Cross 12-inning affair showed that there are weaknesses to be eradicated. The outfield wasn't up to its usual fielding standard--and the infield is not airtight yet, especially around second base. But Ben Prouty at second is a definite improvement, and little Mike Hovenanian may be the answer to the short stop enigma. That middle sack has been a problem all year. At bat things looked a lot better, with the Mitchelimen hitting three pitchers for 13 hits.
