RESIGNATION OF WOODS EFFECTIVE NEXT MONTH

Completing 34 years on the Harvard faculty, James Haughton Woods '87, professor of Philosophy, will relinquish his chair in June and become professor emeritus. He is also a member of the corporation of the Harvard-Yenching Institute.

After gaining his reputation in the field of Oriental Philosophy, he became chairman of the division of Philosophy in 1914-15 and was exchange professor at the Sorbonne and French Provincial Universities from 1916 to 1918 and again in 1927-28.

Born in 1864 in Boston, Professor Woods received his degree here in 1887. After studying at Berlin and Oxford, he received a Ph.D. from Strassburg in 1896. He was assistant in history in 1891 and became lecturer in philosophy in 1900. Since then he has held the following positions: instructor in Anthropology, 1900-01; instructor in Philosophy, 1903-08; assistant professor 1903-13; and professor, 1913-34.
