A modernistic musical score for the Harvard Dramatic Club's spring play, "A Bride for the Unicorn" by Dennis Johnston, will be composed by Vigil Thompson, former director of the Harvard Glee Club, and one of America's foremost modern composers.
The play was first produced in Dublin last year, but the original score has been lost. The new rhythmic score, which is being written for incidental songs and choral chants, is to be played by percussion instruments exclusively, with a kettledrum bearing the main burden. The chorus is composed of two divisions of eight men, and is being provided by the Glee Club.
Thompson is the author of the music of Gertrude Stein's opera, "Four Saints in Three Acts" which is now playing in New York and has also set several of her poems to music. The percussion treatment of the score was decided on as the most effective solution to the problem created by the loss of the original music.
The performance of the play has been changed to May 2, 3, and 4, Leading parts are held by John Cromwell '36 and Lois Hall.
