$3,100 IN SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO FRESHMEN

For high scholarship records at mid-years, sixteen Freshmen have been awarded scholarships totalling $3,100 for the second half of the present year, it was announced today. The scholarships awarded, and their recipients are as follows:

Thomas Hall Scholarship, founded in 1912 by Mrs. Thomas Hall awarded after mid-years to a Freshman, was divided between Fred Leroy Chase, Jr., of Dedham, and Vincent John Rossi, of Utica, New York.

The Crowninshield Scholarships, founded in 1877, by Francis Boardman Crowninshield were awarded to Henry Michael Adlis, of Lynn, Howard Alexander Cook, of New York City, Robert William Furlong, of West Roxbury, and Dean Nevin Shaffner, of Waverley.

The Edwards Whitaker Prize Scholarship "to be awarded at mid-years to the Freshman who shows the most outstanding scholastic ability and intellectual promise as indicated by distinction in studies and general achievement," was awarded to Neil Gardner Melone, of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Mary L. Whitney Scholarships, founded in 1903, by Mrs. Marly L. Whitney and her son, Charles L. B. Whitney '71, were awarded to Henry Wilfred Maxant, of Ayer, and Peter Robert Viereck, of New York City.

The Class of 1867 Scholarship, awarded after mid-years to a Freshman, was awarded to Ira Alexander Watson, of Brockton. The Walcott Scholarship, founded in 1855, by Samuel Baker Walcott, of the Class of 1819, was awarded to John Bradford Bowditch, of Concord. The John Flack Winslow Scholarship, founded in 1930, by Mrs. John Flack Winslow, was awarded to William Ames Coates, of Quincy.

The Markoe Scholarship, founded in 1903, by Mrs. John Markoe, was awarded to Milton Elkin of Mattapan. The Charles Downer Scholarship, established in 1927 by the bequest of Charles Downer '89, was awarded to Robert William Raymond, of Albany, New York. The Warren H. Cudworth Scholarship, founded in 1884, by Mrs. C. M. Barnard, was awarded to Joseph Share, of Salem. The Stoughton Scholarship, founded in 1701, by Lieutenant Governor William Stoughton, of the Class of 1650, was awarded to William Jerome Callaghan, of Dorchester.

The average amount of these scholarships is about $200, and the sums are awarded only to those who have a definite need for the financial aid.
