SWORDSMEN FIGHT IN FIRST TITLE MATCHES

Members of the Varsity fencing team and several graduates yesterday met in the first matches of the University Fencing Championship. After a close series of encounters, Henry P. Walker 1G, of the Harvard Fencing Club, emerged triumphant to take first place in the sabre event. Edward A. Ackerman '34 gained the runner-up position after displaying a strong attack which Walker had difficulty in checking. Both men dueled well in the preliminary matches and easily defeated the other contestants.

Three men qualified for the finals of the epee event and will decide the championship of that class Tuesday. Four men have fought their way to the finals in the foils event and they too will decide that event on the same day.

Gratian Yatsevitch '33, of the Harvard Fencing Club led the qualifiers in the former class, barely beating Webster F. Williams '35 by one point in the total number of points scored. John G. Hurd '34 qualified in third position. Hurd showed unusual skill in the folls matches to surpass the rest of the contestants by several points. Gilbert Kerlin 1L captured second place, and Yatsevitch and Philip E. Lilienthal '35 placed third and fourth respectively.
