COMMITTEE REFUSES TO ACCEPT ENGLISH MATCH

An invitation by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, to compete with Yale in an intercollegiate boxing match in the Madison Square Garden on March 31, has been turned down by the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic sports.

The boxing match was to be held along the lines of the Oxford-Cambridge track meet which is held annually, with a composite team made up of Yale and Harvard competing. It was planned to have a boxing team composed of members of the Yale and Harvard boxing squads meet a team from Oxford and Cambridge. The invitation was extended through Eddie Egan, former Yale and Olympic team boxer and Rhodes scholar at Oxford.

Although no reason for the refusal of the invitation was announced, it is believed that the Committee felt that exposing college boxers to the critical eyes of spectators accustomed to viewing professionals would be unfair. The cheering and jeering that is forbidden in the collegiate matches could not be curbed with such an audience. It was expected by those interested in arranging such a match that it would draw a crowd of at least 12,000.
