St. Marks Will Hold Funeral Rites for William G. Thayer

Funeral rites for Dr. William Greenough Thayer, retired headmaster of St. Marks School in Southbore, will be observed on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the school chapel. Henry Knox Sherrill '12, Bishop of Massachusetts, will conduct the services.

From Groton, of which he was a graduate, and where he taught under Endicott Peabody '83, Dr. Thayer went as headmaster to St. Marks in 1894. For 36 years his school was known for the effectiveness of its headmaster, a quiet man, sympathetic and friendly. Always himself conservative, he was liberal to acknowledge the views of others and quick to recognize progress when it came.

A strong churchman and believer in the beneficial effect of the Church upon boys' lives, under Dr. Thayer St. Marks became one of the leading Episcopalian church schools. In 1930 he retired as headmaster and at the same time as rector of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Southbore. Since then he has been living at his home in Southbore.
