Protesting required physical exercise for student waiters as "unnecessary, impractical, and unfair," a petition demanding abolition of this was yesterday signed by 30 of the student waiters, about three fourths of the total number. It is planned to obtain all the signatures tomorrow and then present the petition to Dean Leighton.
Under present circumstances, student waiters work a total of approximately 21 hours a week, working on alternate days and on alternate Sundays. In addition to this, they are forced to take physical exercise three times each week, in accordance with the rule for Freshman exercise periods.
The petition states that this additional exercise injures scholastic standing both by taking time which might otherwise be used for study and by lowering the health of the waiters so that they are exhausted at the end of the day. "We have been burning the candle at both ends long enough. Thus we unanimously petition that the compulsory exercise rule be revoked in our case."
