STRIKE NEW SNAG OVER SUBJECT FOR PROPOSED DEBATE

Harvard Declines New Subject; Urges Split Team Debate on Originally Proposed Question

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Into the impasse between the Oxford Union Society and the Harvard Debating Council on the subject of the proposed debate was injected an unexpected note yesterday.

Oxford, not yet having received the telegram sent two days ago by Frederick DcW. Bolman '35, president of the Harvard group, which suggested a split team debate on the question of censorship of the press, cabled that they would like to discuss the merits of the proposal that biography should "reveal feet of clay."

Harvard feels that the public would enjoy a political rather than a literary debate, and in addition that it can handle the former subject better. Bolman replied yesterday, repeating the offer of the previous telegram.

The Oxford cable reads as follows: "Impossible Oxford concede. Oxford and BBC propose "The first function of a biographer is to reveal feet of clay. Oxford wishes negative." The NBC added "We are holding up any action on your message of the thirteenth until we get your reaction to this suggestion from Oxford."

Harvard sent this reply through the NBC: "Cannot accept biographer proposition. Urge split team debate as suggested in wire of thirteenth."

Although the debate was scheduled to take place on December 8, over the combined networks of the British Broadcasting Company and the National Broadcasting Company, it now seems highly problematical whether or not a subject can be agreed upon, and the probability of the debate is lessening.
