PLAYFAIR ESTABLISHES A NEW COURSE RECORD

VARSITY MEN GIVEN TOO GREAT HANDICAPS TO WIN

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Fighting a cold wind all the way along the four and one-half mile course, Theodore B. Richards '38, with a handicap of 5 minutes and 30 seconds, yesterday broke the tape in the elapsed time of 29 minutes flat, to win the University Handicap Cross Country Meet. Ten yards behind him came his Freshman running mate, Joseph C. Eaton '38, giving the yearlings first and second places in the event.

Jaako's Varsity men found their handicaps too great to overcome, and Bob Playfair, who lowered the mark set by Arthur S. Pier '35 in the Holy Cross Meet, finished in twelfth place. Playfair, who started from scratch, established a course record of 21 minutes, 50 seconds.

Close on Playfair's heels came Charles F. Woodard '35, another of the scratch men. Woodard's time also bettered the previous record, but gave him only fourteenth place. LeMoyne White '36 was the third scratch man to finish, outsprinting Walter L. Post '35 in the last twenty yards for nineteenth place. Arthur C. Northrup '38, Freshman captain, with a handicap of 2 minutes and 50 seconds, took sixth place.
