Billionaire Investor Gerald Chan Under Scrutiny for Neglect of Historic Harvard Square Theater
By an overwhelming vote of all its members, the History and Government departments have registered a protest with President Conant against the present 6 o'clock closing hour at the College Library, it was learned yesterday from reliable sources. The History Department was the first to register its petition for the restoration of the after-dinner hours abolished in the autumn of 1932, the Government Department shortly following suit with its own resolution.
According to officials at University Hall, there is no chance that the old schedule will be resumed this year, and its resumption next year will depend entirely upon the state of the University's finances. The present operating schedule is estimated to have reduced the annual Library deficit by $15,000.
Other Departments Will Act
It is understood that other departments under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences are contemplating resolutions similar to those adopted by the History and Government departments.
As a result of the University's action in advancing the closing hour to 6 o'clock, open protest was made to the authorities by several members of the University. A mass meeting held on the steps of Widener failed to change the new ruling. In fact, the leaders of the gathering were heckled continually during their speeches.
